Modular Aluminium Sports Venue for Basketball Court in Portugal
 2026/10/12

Client Background

The client is a community sports centre in central Portugal that provides sports facilities for local schools, youth basketball clubs, and residents. The region experiences frequent rain and strong winds from November to February, making outdoor basketball courts unusable for nearly four months each year. Public indoor sports halls are in short supply across Portugal, and many community clubs face a long-term shortage of indoor training venues. The client needed to build an all-weather indoor facility on an existing paved surface without permanent construction, so that local youth basketball training programmes could continue year-round. The project brief called for a Modular Aluminium Sports Venue for Basketball Court, sized to accommodate a full-size court and supporting spaces.

Client Needs and Challenges

Portuguese Temporary Building Permit Requirements

Temporary sports venues in Portugal fall under the category of "recintos improvisados," which requires an installation and operation permit from the local municipal council. The application must be submitted at least 20 days before the activity begins, and the structure must not involve civil construction or permanently alter the terrain. Passing municipal review was a key condition for the project.

No Damage to Existing Ground

The site had a hardened concrete surface. Excavation, concrete pouring, and expansion bolts were all ruled out by the client. The ground needed to be restored to its original condition if the structure was ever removed.

Fast Installation and Delivery Before Winter

The facility had to be operational before the winter rainy season. A short build-up period was essential, and the work could not disrupt nearby schools and clubs.

Clear-Span Space and Multi-Sport Use

The layout needed to meet clearance requirements for a standard basketball court and badminton courts. No internal columns could obstruct the playing area, and the space had to allow quick switching between sports while reserving room for spectators and equipment storage.

Climate Adaptability

Portugal's winter climate is influenced by the Atlantic, with heavy rainfall and strong winds in the central and northern regions. Good wind resistance, waterproofing, and ventilation were required to prevent moisture buildup inside the sports hall.

Solution

LINGTONG TENT designed a Modular Aluminium Sports Venue for Basketball Court with a 20m span and 40m length, covering approximately 800㎡. The column-free interior accommodates a full-size basketball court or two badminton courts, with additional space for spectators and equipment storage.

Structure and Assembly

The frame uses 6061-T6 high-strength aluminium alloy with bolted connections, no welding required. All components were prefabricated at the factory and assembled on site by a local installation team in Portugal. The fixing method uses ballast blocks placed on local base plates, with no excavation or drilling into the existing concrete surface. The original ground is fully preserved. The cover uses double-layer PVC-coated polyester fabric with flame retardancy meeting Portuguese fire safety requirements for temporary structures, and provides waterproof, UV-resistant, and cold-resistant performance.

Functional Zoning and Configuration

The entrance area is for equipment storage and spectator entry. The central section is the main basketball and badminton court. The rear section is reserved for movable seating and a rest area. The interior is fitted with professional sports flooring, LED lighting, and ventilation systems. Basketball hoops and badminton nets are adjustable, allowing quick conversion between training and competition setups. Transparent PVC window panels are integrated into the sidewalls to provide natural daylight while maintaining waterproofing and reducing daytime lighting energy consumption. The entire structure can be relocated and reused at another community site in the future.

Implementation Process

The project started in June 2025. The LINGTONG engineering team confirmed the structure layout and interior configuration based on the site dimensions and the sports centre's functional requirements. Structural calculations, flame-retardant certificates, and construction drawings were submitted to the local municipal council for the temporary premises installation permit. The application was submitted at least 20 days before the activity, and the approval period was about 10 days. With complete documentation submitted, the permit was granted smoothly.

All components were prefabricated at the factory and shipped to Portugal. The local installation team assembled the structure following factory drawings, with remote technical guidance from LINGTONG. The installation sequence started with the aluminium frame, followed by roof and sidewall fabric, sports flooring, lighting system, and sports equipment. The build-up period was 20 days, completed before the autumn rainy season in 2025.

Final Results and Client Feedback

Since being put into use, the venue has become the core indoor sports facility of the sports centre. It is used by nearby schools during the day and by youth basketball clubs and residents in the evenings and on weekends. The project increased the centre's annual usable sports days from about 200 to more than 320, eliminating weather-related interruptions in autumn and winter. The clear-span space allows flexible switching between basketball and badminton courts, and the transparent window panels and LED lighting provide a good sports lighting environment. The all-weather sports enclosure design has proven effective through a full winter season with no weather-related closures.

The client reported that the ballast fixing method caused no damage to the existing concrete surface, the municipal approval process went smoothly, and the structure's wind and waterproof performance remained stable during the rainy winter. Satisfaction among nearby schools and clubs is high, and youth basketball training attendance has increased noticeably.

Client Feedback

"Winter here is very rainy, and outdoor courts are unusable. Public indoor sports halls are also in very short supply. This modular sports venue was successfully built before the rainy season. The clear-span space allows basketball and badminton training to run at the same time, and the ground was not damaged at all. Now schools and clubs are competing to use it. This has been the most practical investment in our community sports facilities."

— Project Manager, Community Sports Centre, Portugal

Summary

This project demonstrates the application of a modular aluminium sports venue in a community sports setting. LINGTONG TENT provided an approximately 800㎡ year-round indoor sports facility for a community sports centre in Portugal through a 20m × 40m clear-span structure, factory prefabrication, ballast fixing, and fast installation. The project passed the Portuguese temporary premises permit process, caused no damage to the existing ground, and meets multi-sport needs including basketball, badminton, and community activities. It effectively addresses the shortage of public indoor sports facilities, and the modular structure supports future relocation and reuse.

Supplementary Notes

This case study is based on an indoor sports venue project at a community sports centre in Portugal. The structure uses factory prefabrication and ballast fixing, allowing fast installation without ground damage. It is suitable for community sports centres, schools, clubs, and other scenarios requiring temporary or semi-permanent indoor sports spaces. The clear-span layout accommodates a full-size basketball court, badminton courts, and other community sports activities, and the modular design supports relocation and reuse.

FAQ

Q: What is a modular aluminium sports venue?

A: It's a prefabricated, clear-span structure built from aluminium alloy frames and PVC fabric. The interior has no columns, so a full-size basketball court or multiple badminton courts can fit inside. It sits on the existing ground without any foundation work.

Q: Can this structure host other sports besides basketball?

A: Yes. The column-free interior makes it easy to switch between basketball, badminton, and other community sports. Spectator seating, equipment storage, and multi-purpose event use can also be accommodated.

Q: Does the structure damage the existing ground?

A: No. Ballast blocks are placed on local base plates, so there's no excavation, drilling, or concrete pouring. The existing ground stays intact and can be fully restored if the structure is relocated.

Q: Is a permit required for this type of sports venue in Portugal?

A: Yes. Temporary sports venues fall under the "recintos improvisados" category and need an installation and operation permit from the local municipal council. The application has to be submitted at least 20 days before the activity starts.

Q: Can the sports venue be relocated to another site?

A: Yes. The modular structure is fully demountable. It can be taken apart, transported, and reassembled elsewhere, which makes it a flexible option for community sports programmes that need to adjust facility locations over time.
